Venice, known worldwide as the city of bridges and canals, has its own story on the banks of the Danube in Zemun, where a restaurant of the same name brings a touch of that magic. Since 1913, Restaurant Venecija has been a symbol of gastronomic delight and gathering, setting the standards in preparing dishes that celebrate local ingredients and tradition.
History of Restaurant Venecija
It all began when the esteemed Zemun merchant Aleksandar Štrajher opened the restaurant right next to the port captaincy, near the spot where riverboats would dock. This place quickly became the central gathering point not only for Zemun but also for Belgrade. The most prominent Belgraders of the time would arrive by boat to enjoy fish soups, specialties, and the unique ambiance of the restaurant. Venecija was not just a restaurant, but a place where culture, history, and the enjoyment of food came together. Over the decades, the restaurant became a symbol of prestige, where guests could enjoy views of the Danube while being captivated by the atmosphere and delicious food.Restoring the Old Glory
Today, more than a hundred years later, Restaurant Venecija once again takes its place among prestigious gastronomic destinations. The new look, combining tradition and a modern approach to cuisine, offers guests the opportunity to enjoy unique specialties while observing the remarkable blend of Venetian gondolas and swans on the Danube.
